"In order for our democratic system to work effectively we need citizens who are prepared to be active participants in our civic life. Students are citizens and their ideas count. I would therefore encourage schools to use the Student Virtual Parliament as an opportunity to enhance the engagement of students in the classroom exploration and discussion of contemporary social and political issues," The Hon. Lynne Kosky MP, Minister for Education and Training, Victoria.

"The Student Virtual Parliament will provide opportunities for students to increase their understanding of the democratic process by actively debating issues of critical importance to them. I encourage Western Australian schools to explore the Student Virtual Parliament, and reflect on its value for their students," The Hon. Alan Carpenter MLA, Minister for Education and Training, Western Australia.

"I commend the Student Virtual Parliament as a great opportunity for students to participate actively in the democratic process. It is an exciting development and a chance for students from around the country to contribute to and experience the decision-making process," Greg Hunt MP, Federal Member for Flinders, Liberal, Fulbright Scholar Yale.

"The Student Virtual Parliament, using the Internet, provides easy access to information at a time and place convenient to the user and allows interaction that can only enhance a student's understanding of and contribution to the democratic process. I support this use of state-of-the-art communication to allow young people to be heard and to influence the decision making process," Jillian Skinner MP, Shadow Minister for Education and Training, NSW.

"Education is central to our future as a democratic society and for nation-building. The Student Virtual Parliament offers students and teachers a significant resource for learning about the democratic process. Students have a real opportunity to influence decisions on matters that are important to them," Jenny Macklin MP, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Shadow Minister for Employment, Education, Training and Science, Federal Member for Jagajaga.

"Democracy is a tool for full and open public participation in the processes of government. Technological advances are stretching this participation even further. I am delighted to see the development of a program which encourages our students to become active participants in the political process - it does, after all, shape our lives," Senator Andrew Bartlett, Leader of the Australian Democrats.

"I support this innovative use of technology to give young Australians a voice on the issues that matter to them. It is vital we foster an understanding of the political processes of our democratic society in our leaders of the future," Craig Emerson MP, Shadow Minister for Innovation, Industry and Trade, Member for Rankin.

New Zealand

"The Student Virtual Parliament is designed to give students a real insight into the democratic system which operates in New Zealand. It assists students to think for themselves in forming opinions and in making decisions about issues they do or do not support. Virtual environments are a thing of the future. The Student Virtual Parliament enables students to enter the parliament system from anywhere is New Zealand. I wish the project well," The Hon Steve Maharey, Acting Minister of Education New Zealand.
