Operating continuously it produces a concise collective expression of student opinion on the issues of the day. The student voice in each school, electorate, state or region and for the whole country can be seen at a glance.
How it worksIt's like a free floating student Opinion Market - transparent, continuous, live and competitive.
Students submit opinions and ideas in the form of placards directly into an online leaderboard any time - no waiting to be asked. Placards are concise opinions or ideas expressed in 12 words or less and may be linked to a more detailed comment. All opinion placards compete daily for votes and are ranked live in the leaderboard. The big issues all opinions forum is now operating. Single issue forums will be opened from time to time.
It's a continuous polling technique that lets students across the country vote daily and submit new opinions any time. This enables students to express their changing priorities through time. The polls show voting results in selected sample periods such as last 24 hours, three days, seven days and 30 days. Repeat votes by the same people are filtered automatically to show unique votes only in the selected sample period.
Results are presented in a concise format that is ideal for elected officials and the media to review any time.
A dedicated discussion board or debating forum is also opened automatically for each placard.
All opinion placards and postings in the attached debating forums are reviewed promptly (near live editing) by Student Virtual Parliament editors before publication. The forum specifies strict rules for publication. Placards and postings that attack others in the school community or that are considered defamatory, sexist, racist or inciting of violence are not published.
Student details capturedStudents are invited to visit the website and register to vote. They are prompted to enter their date of birth, state, postcode, school, school year and electorate but not their name. This information is used for statistical analysis only. Students are invited to provide an email address but this is optional. Email addresses are used only to notify students of occasional synchronized voting dates, new Student Virtual Parliament forums and other information relevant to the Student Virtual Parliament. Email addresses are not used for any other purpose and are protected by strict privacy.
Who can register?All schools are invited to register for the program. Any teacher can register his or her school by clicking Register your School. You will be prompted to complete a one page form that asks for your school name, the name and contact details of a teacher nominated to distribute passwords to students and the number of students requiring access. You will receive an email within 24 hours containing passwords to distribute to each student in your school along with a brief instruction to give students.
School registration feesA small school registration fee applies. This fee entitles all students in your school voting access for 12 months from the date you register. You get access the same day you register and a 14 day invoice is sent in the post. This fee covers our expenses associated with daily and near continuous forum moderation for 12 months, support, issue of student passwords and costs associated with servers, bandwidth and engineers.
